Scallop Quilt / Panorama Trio

Posted by Nicole Daksiewicz on

Hi friends,

Today I am excited to share with you not one, not two, but three Scallop quilts that I have not shared with anyone yet!  Scallop is a modern quilt pattern that is a perfect intro to sewing curves, and comes together really quickly.

These were made back when the original Scallop Quilt came out, and when the original Cotton and Steel group was making fabric under that name. So you might recognize the fabrics that were used on these samples. I made all three quilts using the layout for the Small Throw, you can find more info about the pattern at the end of this post.

Panorama was one of Cotton + Steel's collaborative lines - everyone on the team helped with the design work, so if you are familiar with the designers styles you might be able to figure out who designed what on the patterns.

When I first set out to make these Scallop quilts I loved how the fabrics were grouped into three color groups - the pinks, blues, and grays. I took this as inspiration for what I wanted to do on the Scallop layout and went to work!

This was also the first time I used a pattern on this particular quilt. I was a bit hesitant because you never really know what will happen when you combine large strips of fabric with blocks that were chopped up and sewn back together. I will say that I am SO pleased with how it came out - definitely want to try some large and small scale prints on a Scallop quilt layout again.

I had a bit of trouble locating these fabrics since they came out so long ago - but you CAN still find some here and there. Below I have links for some of the fabricsI was able to locate.

Quilting information

All three quilts were quilted using a straight line stitch with 1" spacing. I kept it pretty neutral using a cream thread on all three since it blended in nicely with all of the fabrics.

All quilts were quilted on my Janome Memory Craft 6700p.

About the pattern

The Scallop Quilt is the fourth quilt in my solid series, designs focused on solid fabrics and negative space. This quilt is perfect for both advanced beginner quilters and those who love a minimalist look. If you are new to sewing curves or want to try it out for the first time, the larger curve shapes make for a great "intro to curves".

  • How easy would it be to increase this quilt pattern for a king size bed? (I need about 110" width)
    Thanks :)

  • Love this quilt. I can see where I could use it to help use up large pieces of stash fabrics.

  • Gorgeous! I’ve been quilting a long time, but have only tried curves once – in a class 15 or more years ago! I think this pattern might be just the thing to get my courage up to try again!
