Hi friends,
Today I am SO excited to share with you my latest modern quilt pattern - Sweetheart! Sweetheart is a large heart quilt with several fabric options and sizes. This is here just in time for Valentines day and is an excellent intro into sewing curves. If you have sewn another one of my curves patterns - Pivot, this one has a similar block structure.
Buy the Sweetheart PDF here / Use code SWEETHEART for 25% off PDF patterns until January 26th 11:30pm EST
Quilt Sizes:
- Small Throw 60 x 60 (Cover quilt) cozy lap / kids quilt or great for decorating
- Large Throw 60 x 80 - this makes a great longer throw or twin size quilt
- Bed Size 80 x 100
- King Size 100 x 100
Layout Options:
- Two Color Hearts Layout: This layout was my original plan for the quilt pattern. It features a background color, and two main colors for your hearts. Since the hearts are on the larger side, a larger print fabric that is non directional or two bold solid prints would be an excellent choice.
- Multi Hearts - Fat Quarters: This layout uses fat quarters for the hearts, each fat quarter equals one full heart or two half hearts on the layout. You can choose a number of prints from an entire line, or go crazy with your fat quarter stash for something really original!
- Multi Hearts - Yardage: This is the layout shown on the cover quilt. It uses half yard cuts (small and large throw) or single yard cuts (Bed and King size). You will choose a background color and then 8-10 different fabrics depending on your quilt size. *Cover quilt is the small throw and uses 8 half yard cuts.
Fabric Requirements:
Planning your quilt:
Along with the printable coloring sheets I have all four sizes in the two color hearts layout and the multi hearts layout - yardage available to mock up over at Pre-Quilt!
I uploaded the Bella solids I am going to be offering in my kits (these should be available this weekend here in my shop) for the Multi hearts yardage, but feel free to choose your favorite solids manufacturer and play with all of the different color options or upload some fun print fabrics!
The coloring sheets for this pattern are a little different from my previous patterns, you will notice that there is a darker outline on the HST areas of the coloring sheet. Since there are multiple fabric layout options, the HST outline will assist you when it's time to piece your quilt together and combine the correct fabrics for this part. Note the Multi heart planning section on page 3 of the PDF.
Not a fan of coloring? I also enjoy taking a small swatch of fabric from my scraps to lay out the plan for my quilt. Using a glue stick, I can secure my swatch to the coloring sheet after figuring out my layout - this will help me when it's time for making my HST blocks and is also a great note on what fabrics were used on my project.
Sample Quilts:
I had quite a bit of time from the initial design of this pattern to make and test several quilts using the different layout options... and I just had too much fun making these and couldn't stop!
Two Color Hearts Example
Two Color Hearts / Large Throw
This quilt is an example of a two color hearts layout in the large throw size 60 x 80. I used two of my favorite Moda Bella solids for this one: Ruby and Peony with a bright white background.
Multi Hearts / Yardage Examples
Palette Picks Version / Small Throw
This is an example of a Multi Hearts / Yardage layout. The small throw 60 x 60 requires 8 half yards and for this sample I used Kona solids and Essex linens from the Modern Handcraft Palette Picks bundle I curated last year for Robert Kaufman.
I have a full list of similar Kona solids + Bella solids listed in the pattern and below if you would like to create something similar.
Kona Solids:
- White
- Peach
- Nectarine
- Coral
- Chili
- Honeysuckle
- Dragon Fruit

I Heart Ombre Version / Small Throw
This quilt is an example of a Multi Hearts / Yardage layout. The small throw requires 8 half yards, and for this sample I used 8 half yards of I heart ombre by V and Co for Moda farbics. The ombre fabric really gives the appearance of several different colors, almost a scrappy look. Any ombre fabric would give this same look - it makes me think of gemstones!
I Heart Ombre Colors:
- Off White
- Coral
- Tangerine
- Geranium
- Cherry
- Hot Pink
- Pomegranite
- Mauve
- Aubergine
Starry Version / Small Throw
This quilt is an example of a Multi Hearts / Yardage layout. The small throw requires 8 half yards and for this sample I used 8 half yards of Starry by Ruby Star Society. There was just enough fabric left over from each color to make a fun scrappy binding!
Starry Colors:
- Natural
- Nutmeg
- Warm Red
- Saddle
- Pistachio
- Vivid Pink
- Turquiose
- Dusk
- Blue Ribbon
Evolve Version / Small Throw
This quilt is an example of a Multi Hearts / Yardage layout. The small throw requires 8 half yards, and for this sample I used 8 yards of the line Evolve by Suzy Quilts for Art Gallery Fabrics. I really enjoyed using a color palette that isn't what you might gravitate towards for a heart quilt - making this a more year round quilt or even a fun wedding quilt if the wedding party chose these colors!
Evolve Colors:
- Tiny Moon Matcha
- Tiny Meadow Nova
- Basket Weave Key Lime
- Coneflower Hemlock
- Tiny Moon Nova
- Evolve Key Lime
- Boho Leaves Matcha
- Meadow Key Lime
- Meadow Matcha
Multi Hearts / Fat Quarter Examples
Queen of Hearts Version / Small Throw
This quilt is an example of a Multi Hearts / Fat Quarter layout. The small throw requires 18 fat quarters, and for this sample I used 18 fat quarters from the line Queen of Hearts by Fableism. The line only comes in 14 different fabrics, so I ordered an additional 4 fat quarters to finish my layout. Love the woven fabrics, with the darker Kona navy background.
Love Blooms Version / Small Throw
This quilt is an example of a Multi Hearts / Fat Quarter layout. The small throw requires 18 fat quarters, and for this sample I used 18 fat quarters from the line Love Blooms by Lella Boutique for Moda Fabrics. I had so much fun with this one - the Valentines inspired line had several different fabrics to choose from and the colors and prints look great right next to each other!
Canyon Springs Version / Small Throw
This quilt is an example of a Multi Hearts / Fat Quarter layout. I used 18 fat quarters from the line Canyon Springs by Fableism. I will be quilting this one over the weekend and am so excited to see it finished - the colors and prints are just so fun on this line.
I will be sharing individual blog posts over the next two weeks for each quilt that will include more photos, information on all the fabrics used, quilting and any additional bits of info that might come in handy if you would like to make something similar! I will also have a few of these for sale in my shop - because my family is buried under quilts right now and is saying NO MORE! hahaha
Thanks again for reading the blog today! I will have a sale on all PDF patterns in the shop until Sunday Jan 26th 11:30pm EST - using code SWEETHEART.
Stay tuned for blog posts on each quilt and an update when the printed patterns arrive and are in stock.
Happy sewing!
