Hi friends,
Today I am sharing a Checkers Quilt that was PURE joy to make! I fell in love with the Sugar Cone line by Kimberly Kight for Ruby Star Society last year and had to make something colorful and fun. The Checkers quilt pattern was a perfect match because I was able to keep the cute prints mostly whole for the Checkers layout, it would he a shame to cut up all of these fun prints!
The Checkers quilt is a modern quilt pattern that has instructions for four sizes: Crib, Throw, Bed and King. The pattern includes instructions for three different layouts as well.
- Multi Color - this Sugar Cone version, fat eighth and fat quarter friendly
- 2 Color - Choose yardage (you will have 2 colors for your background checkerboard and then 2 colors for your light and dark half circles.
- Scrappy - Choose fabrics from your scrap bin or utilize a layer cake or two for a fun and scrappy Checkers look.
New to sewing half circles? The pattern includes a link to a video all about sewing half circle blocks, coloring pages in each size and step by step directions with colorful diagrams.

When planning your Checkers Quilt and choosing fabrics its nice to have a high contrast between your colors to really make your checkerboard stand out - this is why I chose a darker shade of pink that coordinates with the sugar cone line for my background color.
For the Checkers - pair up fabrics that have a lighter and darker tone - in similar colors if possible. This gives the illusion of transparency.
Quilting Information:
For this one I decided to quilt it myself using a fun grid line pattern.
This was super simple and a great way to manage quilting a larger throw like this on my home machine.
I used a cream thread that blended with the Ivory Bella solid nicely - straight line quilting in both directions using a 1.5" space with my guidebar.
Finished Quilt:
Thank you so much for checking out the blog today! If you would like to make a Checkers quilt of your own it's available as a PDF and as a Printed pattern.
You can also bring this one home, this quilt is available here in my shop!
Happy Sewing,
Nicole
