Ombrè Table Runner / Tutorial

Hi friends!

Today I am sharing a great beginning quilting project to make for your home - the Ombrè table runner. Choose your favorite fabrics in a color or shade gradient to get the full ombrè look.

Material Requirements

Fabric cuts:

  • Fabric 1 - (8) 2.5" x 6" rectangles
  • Fabric 2 - (6) 2.5" x 6" rectangles
  • Fabric 3 - (6) 2.5" x 6" rectangles + 2.5" x    for binding
  • Fabric 4 - (6) 2.5" x 6" rectangles
  • Fabric 5 - (6) 2.5" x 6" rectangles
  • Fabric 6 - (6) 2.5" x 6" rectangles
  • Fabric 7 - (8) 2.5" x 6" rectangles
  • Fabric 8 - (5) 2.5" x 6" rectangles + 18" x 35" rectangle for backing

Fabrics used are from Timeless Treasures - Tonga Batiks

Additional materials:

  • Quilt batting measuring 18" x 35"
  • Coordinating thread
  • Basting spray
  • Rotary cutter / mat / acrylic ruler

Runner Assembly

Place cut pieces in the order shown, reference chart for layout. 

Sew pieces together going column by column, using a ¼” seam allowance.

Press seams in one direction, going in opposite directions for each column. 

Sew columns together matching up seams (nesting seams).

Press column seams open to reduce bulk. 

Finishing Runner

  1. Layer the backing (right side down), batting layer, runner top (right side up).
  2. Baste layers together using basting spray.
  3. Quilt as desired. Example shown has quilting along lines of rectangles. 
  4. Square up and trim sides to match runner top.
  5. From the binding strips cut, piece together end to end. Press open seams. Fold the binding strip in half, wrong sides together and press. Bind the runner using a ¼” seam allowance.
