Hi friends,
Today I am sharing one of my favorite Illusion quilts that I made over a year ago. This two color Kona solid quilt has a combo of Roasted Pecan and Ballerina, two of my favorite solids. The combo looks amazing on this modern quilt pattern that is a classic checkerboard pattern with a twist!
I tend to make so many samples while testing my patterns and some of these get tucked away waiting to be photographed and blogged. I can't believe I waited so long on this one - she's a stunner! *PS she is for sale in my shop too if you want to bring her home!
Quilt Pattern
The pattern I used is called Illusion, this was released last year in 2023 and is a fun checkerboard style quilt with a twist. The change in block size gives an illusion that is subtle and will trick your eyes.
This is an advanced beginner pattern working with nesting seams and accurate strip piecing. It is traditionally pieced and does not require a template.
The pattern includes the following sizes and has instructions for 2 color, 8 color and 14 color versions.
- Baby 44.5" x 45"
- Throw 61.5" x 75"
- Bed Size 81" x 90"
- King 101" x 105"
You can find the printed pattern here - and PDF here.
Fabric
For this quilt I used a combo of Roasted Pecan and Ballerina - both Kona solids by Robert Kaufman. I fell in love with these colors back when I was planning my Modern Handcraft palette picks bundle and will definitely incorporate them into another project in the future. The Ballerina shade really takes on a violet color when in the right lighting - so it might look odd here. Paired with an early morning light in my studio it really picks up on the blue undertones of the color.
For the backing I chose this fun print I found at Joann fabrics - I believe sadly this print is no longer available. I love how perfectly it matches the Roasted Pecan solid!
Quilting
This is also one of the first quilts I got to try out free motion quilting on. I chose a coordinating thread and did a simple orange peel shape along each side of the squares and rectangles of the quilt. It was definitely a labor of love - took a bit of time - but the texture and the final result was so worth it.
