Hi friends,
Today I am sharing a Checkers Quilt that was SO much fun to make using a line that is now considered - last year's Halloween fabric by Ruby Star Society - Tiny Frights!
If you love this quilt - you can find it for sale in my shop here!
The Checkers quilt is a modern quilt pattern that has instruction for four sizes: Crib, Throw, Bed and King. The pattern includes instructions for 3 different layouts as well.
- Multi Color - this version, fat eighth and fat quarter friendly
- 2 Color - Choose yardage (you will have 2 colors for your background checkerboard and then 2 colors for your light and dark half circles.
- Scrappy - Choose fabrics from your scrap bin or utilize a layer cake or two for a fun and scrappy Checkers look.
New to sewing half circles? The pattern includes a link to a video all about sewing half circle blocks, coloring pages in each size and step by step directions with colorful diagrams.

When planning out your Checkers quilt and choosing fabrics - you want to have a high contrast between your colors to really make your checkerboard stand out - this is why I chose black and cream for the background.
For the Checkers you will pair up fabrics and have a lighter and darker fabric - the lighter one with the lighter checkers background and the darker with the darker checkers background. This gives an illusion of transparency.
Quilting Information:
My amazing friend Lilo over at Trace Creek Quilting did the quilting on several of my Checkers Quilts.
This panto is called: Gossamer
You can find more of Lilo's work here on her website Trace Creek Quilting and over on her Instagram page.
Finished Quilt:
So - how easy is it to photograph glow in the dark fabric accurately? Not very, hahaha! I was able to snap this pic in my bathroom in total darkness - did it glow this much, no but it was definitely noticeable - this is some weird ultra glow that my camera captured. "Objects in photo are glowier than they really appear". I will say the glow in the dark fabric really makes a fun effect and is perfect for a Halloween Quilt!
Thanks again for checking out the blog post today! You can find the PDF pattern here, and the printed pattern here.
Again, if you love this quilt and want to bring it home - you can find it for sale in my shop here.
Happy Sewing!
