Hi friends,
Happy new year to all of you! To start out 2023 I thought it might be fun to share a project that I had the opportunity to work on late last year. Robert Kaufman fabrics - the maker of Kona solids, releases a color of the year or COTY as it's often referred to. This years color is a vibrant coral / hot pink / red combo called Crush, and it's such a fun shade!
They were interested in seeing some smaller projects using the fabric and I knew exactly what I wanted to make - a Hexie Pillow!
I absolutely love working with solids and the challenge of combining colors that really give off a certain feeling. Since Crush has such a pink undertone I wanted to bring a similar vibrant red shade into the mix - but with an orange pop. I settled on Kona Chili K001-1838 and the rest is history!
The two colors together are JUST similar enough to trick your eye - but different enough it still lets the hexies pop off of the pillow.
I used the Chili fabric for the background, and Crush for the hexies and the binding on the pillow.
The Hexie Pillow pattern is a fun one for making a quick project - the pattern gives you the instructions to make a finished pillow - or you can use the instructions and video links to help you create any type of modern hexie project.
Here are the Crush hexies freshly glued to the Chili background fabric.
I chose a vibrant red shade for my quilting lines - it blended in nicely with both shades used. The colors are so vibrant it was hard to really get an accurate photo of the colors.
I love making a modern hexie project - not only is the quilting so much fun to do - the finished texture is just amazing.
Thanks for stopping by the blog today! If you are interested in getting some Kona Crush or Chili for a future project - I have some links below!

Also if you are interested in making your own Hexie Pillow here is the link to the PDF and the printed pattern. The only change I made to this finished pillow is to add a binding to the edges instead of finishing as the pattern instructs.
Hope you have a great beginning to your 2023!
Happy sewing,
Nicole
