Hi friends, today I am sharing a new quilt pattern from my friends over at Fat Quarter Shop – Summer Breeze.
After finally deciding on a beautiful stack of Brushstroke fabric by Holly Degroot / Cloud 9, I chose some solids and my trusty solid white as my main background color. The Creative Grids 45 degree Kaleidoscope ruler was a huge help and made cutting out all of the triangles a breeze, I can see myself using this tool quite a bit.
After sewing together a few, I fell in love with the look of 4 blocks together, so I decided to make a pillow for my living room. The blocks combined do not quite make a large enough pillow so I cut
- (4) 2″ x 20″ strips to sew on each side of the 4 square block.
- (2) 14″ x 20″ rectangles for the envelope back (add a double fold and sew to create a finished edge on each along one long side.
The finished pillow size is 18″ x 18″ and fits the standard Ikea pillow forms I use in my house. Do I need another pillow? Apparently yes, I do. I just love it!
As for the remaining blocks and triangles, I am ordering some more fabric so I can finish up a kid’s size throw quilt for my niece.
(Side note, the scraps that the pattern creates, are just perfect for making an additional project – there will not be wasted fabric! You will have several perfect triangles ready to go – maybe more pillows? Why not!)
The Creative Grids 8 1/2″ square ruler was fantastic for cutting out the finished size I needed and is a great tool to have in your ruler collection, there are even little non-slip circles on the back to help. This was my first experience with this ruler brand and I am seriously impressed with that additional feature.
For those of you that are more visual learners like myself, be sure to check out Fat Quarter Shops videos on their YouTube channel while sewing on some of the trickier parts. I enjoyed the extra little tips, on where to pin and making sure everything lines up correctly.
Be sure to check out some of my friends work with the Summer Breeze Quilt – I love seeing how the different fabric combinations create such a different look!
