Modern Handcraft // Sew Adorkable Blog Hop Tour: 8 Bit Birds

The drawing has now closed – our winner was Cassandra – I will be emailing you shortly, thanks everyone for commenting with your favorite games! There are definitely some good ones and some I have never heard of that I have to check out!

There are certain people you meet in your life that you just get. If you are really lucky they also have a passion for the same things you do and that makes it even better. If you are really really really lucky, they are also insanely hilarious – and that my friends is Samarra Khaja!

I met Samarra two years ago while standing in line at Quilt Market waiting for a signed book, we had chatted online before (like most of us do) and instantly felt like we were buddies upon seeing each other for the first time. I’m not sure if she remembers this but she told me she was working on a new book – and I told her, please let me make something out of it when you are done!

Modern Handcraft // Sew Adorkable Blog Hop Tour: 8 Bit Birds

Well, here we are today – Samarra with a finished book Sew Adorkable – 15 DIY Projects To Keep You Out Of Trouble and I had the extreme pleasure of getting a sneak peek of the entire thing (oh man it’s really good) and made something!

Also, read a it further down for a chance to win something really awesome….

When I first had a chance to look through the book there were a few projects that really stood out to me, the Odd Socks Quilt, that Jessee from Art School Dropout made (I am totally making that for my laundry room!) and also Toothy the Tooth Fairy Pillows, for my young son who hopefully waits a few more years to start losing teeth.

The one that I really had a connection with was 8-bit Birds, and yes its a smaller take of the original 3 bird version but it’s my most favorite part…..

Modern Handcraft // Sew Adorkable Blog Hop Tour: 8 Bit Birds

I was a HUUUUUUUGE fan of Duck hunt growing up, and if you were also a child in the 80’s I am sure you have a certain sentimental feeling about the above image as well. 8-bit Birds is a fun pixelated quilt featuring 3 birds / a mallard, a cardinal and a blue jay. The original quilt measures 60.5″ x 60.5″ so it’s much larger than my mini that measures 34.5″ x 29″.

Modern Handcraft // Sew Adorkable Blog Hop Tour: 8 Bit Birds

I quilted it by “stitching in the ditch” or quilting along each seam and then added an extra quilting stitch through the middle of each pixellated square.

Modern Handcraft // Sew Adorkable Blog Hop Tour: 8 Bit Birds

I framed by duck with a rich mahogany wood frame ( or a lovely wood look fabric ) and a camo backing….because we all have camo fabric right?

Modern Handcraft // Sew Adorkable Blog Hop Tour: 8 Bit Birds

I wanted to display my prize duck as a trophy for all of those hunts I went on as a child. Nintendo hunts that is, I could never actually hurt one of these pretty little guys. When I have some more time, I am going to make the full version of the quilt because I think it will be the coolest game room quilt ever and I know my son will appreciate it when he is older.

Side note, when he saw this duck on my design wall….it terrified him. He just kept moving back and saying no no no. I of course thought that was hilarious….but then he warmed up to it. Who knew three year olds were afraid of pixellated ducks?!

Samarra and C&T Publishing are giving away a free copy of Sew Adorkable to one of my amazing readers! All you have to do to enter is leave a comment telling me your most favorite video game ever – not a video game player? Leave a comment with your favorite board game – all games are fun!

This book sounds like a lot of fun….my favourite game to play as a child was the monopoly board game although I did have fun playing Nintendo.

  6. Sandy G 3 years ago

PAC Man! Ya old school, but whenever I see it I have to play 🙂

    Cool book too !

  7. Lynne 3 years ago

    Love your duck!
My favorite video game was Super Mario Bros.

  8. Susan K 3 years ago

One of the Mario games. Funny story – I had played it on my son’s Gameboy and had gotten into the castle and started getting coins. I played while watching tv with my husband in the evenings. One day my nephew was visiting. He loved anything with buttons. Little twerp cleared off my game!! Never could get into the game again. I’ve never left him forget it either. 😉

  9. Julia 3 years ago

Tetris! There was a time in college when I was hopelessly addicted.

  10. Shannon P 3 years ago

  13. Hayley 3 years ago

Love your duck!! I love cranium and pictionary and really you can’t go past trivial pursuit. I can’t wait till my girls are a bit bigger to play guess who? As well

  14. Cassandra 3 years ago

My son is a huge Retro gaming 8bit fan, your duck is so cute!!!

  15. Michelle 3 years ago

My favorite video game was Frogger. A few years ago, we found it in the form of a little box with nothing but a joystick on top, which attaches directly to our tv, and we got it for our girls. They loved it, but now they’re older and I’m the only one who still plays!

Thanks for the opportunity to win such a cute book!

  16. Gwynne 3 years ago

I LOVED Earthworm Jim when I was younger.

  17. Allison C 3 years ago

This is freakn awesome!! I was a fan of this game too, but Maniac Mansion was my fav. BurgerTime, DigDug, and Arkanoid are also high up on the list. I just finished my DigDug quilt….which I started 6 years ago.

  27. Funny thing, I just loved the pixelated duck without knowing it came from a video game. My only video game experience is Tetris. I freak out too terribly when faced with any game’s urging me to “be quick about it”–just not my thing. More into word games like Scrabble or Boggle.

  28. Bevin Torres 3 years ago

Bullet Storm was the first video game that hooked me. I just can’t find many games that do.

  58. Lisa 3 years ago

Hello! Thanks for a great giveaway. My favorite video games were tetris and Dr. Mario…it was soothing to fit those blocks together. I also have great memories playing MarioKart with my siblings.

  59. Florencia 3 years ago

My favorite video game of all time is Tetris! I didn’t have a console growing up but my friend did. I was the worst player at Super Mario Bros but redeemed myself at Duck Hunt.

  60. Lindsay 3 years ago

Oh my gosh, it has to be the original Mario Bros. for NES. My best friend and I played all of the time as kids and I was always Luigi, leading to my childhood nickname of Louie. Her parents still call me that 25 years later!

  61. Cherie L 3 years ago

We were a Super Mario obsessed household (at least us kids)!

I would love to hear from you, let's chat!
