Hi friends and welcome to my stop on the Panda-Monium blog hop with Fat Quarter Shop!
I am sharing my take on this adorable free pattern, created by the talented people over at Fat Quarter Shop. This is a part of Fat Quarter Shops Sew Solid series focusing on modern novelty blocks that you can turn into mini projects, or make several of the blocks for a big quilt!
For my project I wanted to stick with the classic black and white panda colors but jazz it up a bit with mostly patterned fabrics. I usually like to stick with solids so this was a bit out of my comfort zone, and I love how it turned out!
- Two fabrics from Zephyr – Rashida Coleman-Hale for Cotton and Steel // Puff Mustard in the bamboo middle & Gale Citron as the cloud background
- Alison Glass for Andover Fabrics – Black Text, Sunprint Ink for the Panda body, and Mercury for eyes.
- Robert Kaufman Kona cotton in Wasabi for part of the bamboo, and Yarn Dyed Black Essex Linen for the pillow backing.
I followed the directions for the panda and it took just under 2 hours for me to complete the panda as directed. I took a couple of breaks here and there so that might change the time just a bit.
There is quite a bit of cutting for this pattern, it helps to print out the pattern and check off each part that you cut out so you do not waste any fabrics by over cutting.
The biggest help was keeping all of my pieces in order and labeled….because there are literally 26 different pieces for this pillow top. I promise it looks a little daunting but if you label each part you will have no issues and sewing your panda together will be a breeze!
I may have to go back and make this section again and make a little panda eye mask for sleeping on the plane…wouldn’t that be fun?!
I squared my finished panda to 19″ x 19″ and quilted it with 1/2″ straight line quilting. Added a back piece of Black Essex linen and zipper and I now have a fun panda pillow! I plan on selling this at a craft fair I have a booth at this next weekend in Chicago. I hope to make this again soon, in a pink palette for a new baby that arrived not long ago – by placing the panda section in the middle of a baby blanket.
