Field Day

Field Day
July 23, 2014 nicole

Hi friends!

So excited to share with you today a project that I have been working away on for the past few weeks – my Field Day quilt and pillow! This is a new line created by Alison Glass for Andover Fabrics and the colors are just stunning. Field Day also coordinates with Alison’s other lines – Lucky Penny, Clover Sunshine and Sunprint.

I met Alison at Quilt Market this year (Click here to see pictures from Quilt Market) and was so excited because I have been a huge fan of hers ever since I got my hands on her first line Lucky Penny. Her booth was incredible and she was as sweet as you could imagine! Alison invited me to create a project featuring her new line and I knew that I had to make another quilt.

I played around with a few different backing fabrics – Kona Wasabi was almost a Β winner but then I had to go with my old faithful newsprint, and it really made the color’s pop! The newsprint is actually fabric from a cotton king size duvet cover from H&M I have been hacking away at for a while – that will be our little secret πŸ™‚

The orange petal design was fused with Heat n Bond lite and then petal shapes cut out by hand and ironed onto 11″ squares. A quick zigzag stitch around the edges in white Aurifil secured each piece. I plan on featuring a tutorial on this quilt here in the near future – it was actually so much fun to make.

You can see how to make my Field Day applique pillow over on the Therm O Web blog.

For the quilting I did a straight line stitch spaced about 1″ and backed the quilt with the same newsprint fabric.

And now for a giveaway! Alison is hosting a blog hop over on her blog showcasing several new projects created from her new line. Be sure to stop by and enter to win a complete fat quarter set of Field Day from Andover or an Alison Glass thread collection from Aurifil!

Thanks again to Alison for sending me this fun bundle of fabric to play with, my Alison Glass quilt collection is growing and I love it!

  3. What a lovely quilt. I love an Orange Peel quilt, though I’ve yet to make one. And that text fabric really does make those bright colours pop. And here I was thinking I could find some of it at one of my fav on-line quilt shops. Oh well.

Thank you Jenn! Orange Peel quilts are so much fun to make especially if you applique them – makes for a quick project πŸ™‚ I was able to purchase the text fabric from H & M Home and it was only $50 for a king size duvet – which was a TON of fabric!!

love your quilt – I just got Alison’s bundle of fabrics and I’ve always wanted to do an orange peel – thanks so much for doing a tutorial – can’t wait to get started ! might have to check out wasabi too !!

  27. This quilt is FABULOUS! I love the big bold petals teamed with a great background fabric. I would never have thought to use a doona cover as a fabric source – but it’s genius and now I shall be keeping my eye out on manchester sales! Thanks for the tip! πŸ™‚

I couldn’t find the tutorial on the orange peel quilt. Can you tell me what the stitch length and height was on your zig-zag? Also, I used the Heat and Bond Lite (fused on my uncut fabric) but had so many stray threads peeling off the edges of my cut pieces it was a mess. How did you deal with that?

  30. Heather 3 years ago

I tried looking for the tutorial on the Field Day Quilt but didn’t see one. Could you tell me the amount of fabric you used?
